By the degree of activity, hyperhomocysteinemia is divided into 3 groups: moderate 15-25 μmol / l, intermediate 25-50 mcmom / l and severe 50-500 mcmol / l.
In the laboratory of Astghik MC, 72% of those with a high rate had a moderate level, 24% had intermediate, and 4% had severe,> 100 mcg / mmol, 8 of which were patients neurological department, and 5 out of 6 men older than average.
56% of neurologic stationary patients had high rates of homocysteine, and it was increased at only 10 % of pregnant women.
Statistical data show that hyperhomocysteemia is more common among men than women. 60.5% of men and 49% of women had a high level of homocysteine, “she said.
Why is high level of homocysteine dangerous?
According to Marine Manoukyan, a high level of homocysteine leads to the risk of having atherosclerosis, infarction, stroke, thrombosis, thrombophlebitis, Alzheimer’s disease, an intra-uterine fetal death at pregnant women.
He mentioned, that high concentration of homocysteine is specific to homocysteinuria, which is a hereditary disease. It is characterized by an accumulation of homocysteine, which is caused by the deficiency of the enzyme which participates in homocysteine destruction. The increase of homocystein level with 5 μmol / L, elevates the risk of getting atherosclerosis(80 % for women and 60 % for men), with 2.5 μmol / L the risk of getting infarction elevates with 10% and getting a stroke with 20 %.
As for pregnancy, according to the specialist, high level of homocysteine during pregnancy may lead to miscarriage or non-developing pregnancy.
In order to proceed pregnancy without problems, it is important to control the level of homocysteine throughout pregnancy, and the same should be done at the pregnancy planning stage. Statistics show, that high level of homocystein can be the cause of premature birth , and those babies, at the earliest age, are receptive to various diseases.
For pregnant women, homocysteine deviation with 0.5 μmol / L is considered normal, and in case of higher deviations it is advisable to consult a doctor. The density of homocysteine decreases during pregnancy, especially at early stage , which ensures improved blood circulation of placenta. The level of homocysteine returns normal within 2-4 days after delivery. Along with age, the concentration of homocystein in the blood rises, and in women organism, it increases after menopause.
She explains in what cases the amount of homocysteine should be checked in the body:
- When You have homocysteineuria -the hereditary disease
- Persons who have inherited tendency for developing to ischemic heart disease
- Women who plan to become pregnant or are already pregnant
- During B6, B12 and folic acid deficits
According to her, homocyteine is a sulfur-containing amino acid, which is synthesized in the body and affects on the process of methionine metabolism.
In the normal human body, homocysteine has a minimal amount.
In the case of violation of normal metabolism, the amount of homocysteine increases in the body. The free homocysteine penetrates into the cell in the body with the help of B group vitamins, which is why when a person has an avitaminosis, homocysteine accumulates in the cell membranes and damages them.
